Based on the 1989 memoir by historian Jill Ker Conway who was born and raised on a vast and isolated Australian sheep ranch called Coorain. The story, which opens in the early 1940s, deals with Jill's difficult relationship with her stoical mother Eve (Stevenson), who keeps Coorain even after being widowed and moving her family to Sydney. Jill proves to be an exceptional student and excels at university but family tragedies continue to haunt the Kers.
