White Dwarf Movie Review

Confusing made-for-TV sci-fi/fantasy adventure finds edgy Manhattan internist Driscoll Rampart (Neal McDonough) serving his residency on Rusta, a war-torn planet located in a white-dwarf star system. The planet is divided into two hemispheres, one in perpetual darkness and the other in constant light. Rampart learns the ropes from mystical doc Akada (Paul Winfield), who's also involved in a peace accord between Rusta's warring leaders. Other characters include an immortal princess, her fish-monster guardian, and a boy afflicted with a strange disease that gives him the ability to change into various animals. Visually striking but overly ambiguous – the film never quite resolves its science-fiction and fantasy elements. Some of the problems can probably be traced to the fact that it was intended as the pilot for a never-launched weekly series.
