Mac and Me Movie Review

Heavy backing by McDonalds created a merchandising opportunity that turns into a subplot-for-subplot ripoff of E.T. Here a whole family of Chaplinesque aliens are hauled to Earth by a Mars probe. ‘Mac,’ the smallest, escapes government captivity and befriends a handicapped boy. Apparently feeling he had nothing to lose critic-wise, director Stewart Raffill (of Wilderness Family fame) takes the plot into directions that Spielberg wouldn't have dared; dig that wild final scene. Sure to please younger kids, and it might even break down the resistance of adult viewers. Maybe.

1988 (PG) 94m/C Christine Ebersole, Jonathan Ward, Katrina Caspary, Lauren Stanley, Jade Calegory; D: Stewart Raffill; W: Stewart Raffill; M: Alan Silvestri. Golden Raspberry Awards ‘88: Worst Director (Raffill). VHS, Beta, LV ORI
