The Guyver Movie Review

Wimp college student is transformed into a chitinous superhero thanks to his discovery of an organic alien battle suit, the “Guyver,” and helps CIA agent Mark Hamill keep the device from falling into the claws of Zoanoids, evil mutants guiding the evolution of mankind. Based on a popular Japanese comic book (and resulting cartoons), this rather predictable series of creature wrestling matches has its roots in Ultraman, Infra-Man, and other futuristic good guys who combat guest-starring monstrosities. F/x artist Screaming Mad George endows each Zoanoid with a different grotesque look, and thus the whole thing feels like an excuse for the collectible trading cards.

1991 92m/C Mark Hamill, Vivian Wu, David Gale, Jeffrey Combs, Michael Berryman, Jack Armstrong, Jimmie Walker; D: Steve Wang, Screaming Mad George; W: Jon Purdy; C: Levie Isaacks; M: Matthew Morse. VHS COL, NLC
