A modern retelling of Jean Renoir's classic "Boudu Saved from Drowning" with some nice star turns. Neurotic and wealthy Beverly Hills married Dave (Dreyfuss) and Barbara (Midler) find their lives turned upside down when they prevent suicidal bum Jerry Baskin (Nolte) from drowning in their pool. Jerry takes over the household--bedding Barbara, her daughter Jenny (Nelson), and their sultry maid Carmen (Pena)--offering encouragement to a frustrated Dave and his son Max (Richards)--and even solving family dog Matisse's identity crisis. Naturally, Jerry learns there's more to life than being a bum.
