A performance of Puccini's opera taped at London's Covent Garden. Manon, a beautiful but shallow young woman, falls in love with a poor student, but later leaves him for a wealthy older man. When the student returns, she entreats him to forgive her, but their passionate reunion is cut short and she is accused of adultery. She's deported to America, and he convinces the prison ship captain to let him accompany her. Together at last, they meet a tragic end in the swamps surrounding New Orleans. Puccini's first major success.
