A fast talking con-artist (Garner) and his black partner (Gossett) travel throughout the antebellum South setting up scams--Gossett is sold to a new owner by Garner, who helps him escape. Garner and Gossett make a splendid comedy team in this different kind of buddy flick. All is well until Asner turns the tables on them. Finely acted comedy-drama.
