Interesting but overly serious mid-career Hitchcock, adapted from Paul Anthelme's 1902 play, "Our Two Consciences." Father Michael Logan (Clift) is a young curate in Quebec, who hears the murder confession of Otto Keller (Hasse). Keller knows Father Logan can tell no one because of the sanctity of the confessional, even when Logan himself comes under suspicion for the crime. Unfortunately, the resolution to the conflict is not up to the master's usual standards.
