A successful adaptation of the Tony award-winning play by Schary, who wrote the screenplay and also produced the film. In 1921, the Roosevelt family is vacationing at Campbello when Franklin (Bellamy, re-creating his stage role) becomes ill with what turns out to be polio. His formidable mother Sara (Shoemaker) wants her paralyzed so to give up his political aspirations but politico pal Louis Howe (Cronyn) insists Franklin get on with living, aided by the strength of wife Eleanor (an excellent performance by Garson).
