An involving psychological thriller based on records of witch trials from the early 1600s. Young Anne (Movin) is married to the much older and puritannical widower, Absalon (Roose) but falls in love with his son Martin (Lerdorff). She wishes aloud for her husband's death and when he does dies, Anne is accused of witchcraft. Grim and unrelentingly pessimistic, moving from one horrific scene to another, director Dreyer creates a masterpiece of terror. Based on a play by Hans Wiers Jenssen. In Danish with English subtitles.
