Amoral young model Diana Scott (Christie) tries to hold boredom at bay by having a number of love affairs. She moves from intellectual Robert (Bogarde) to playboy Miles (Harvey) and eventually joins the international jet set and manages to reach the top of European society by marrying a prince. Diana then learns what an empty life she has. Christie won an Oscar for her portrayal of the disillusioned, cynical young woman.
