Three whalers are stranded in the Arctic in the 1890s and are taken in by an Eskimo vilage. They teach the villagers about booze, gambling, and other modern amenities. Resentment grows until a clash ensues. All three leads are excellent, especally Oates. Much of the dialogue is in an Eskimo language, subtitled in English, as in "Dances with Wolves."
