Clayburgh, as the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court, finds a friendly rival in colleague Matthau, a crusty but benign liberal judge. Though based on a Broadway hit, it ended up seeming to foreshadow the real-life appointment of Sandra Day O'Connor, which occurred at about the time the film was released. The title refers to the date the court begins its sessions.
