A lush, decadent adaptation of the Thomas Mann novella about a aging, jaded, and dying composer Gustav von Aschenbach (Bogarde)--here suggested to be Gustav Mahler--who is plagued by fears that he can no longer feel anything. Instead, he becomes tragically obsessed with ideal beauty as personified in the young boy, Tadzio (Andresen). Visconti uses Mahler's 3rd and 5th symphonies to haunting effect.
