An optical experiment visualizes the concept of the energy gap in semiconductors by measuring the wavelength of the light emitted by the recombination of excess hole-electron pairs in the neighborhood of a pn-junction. The intensity of the emitted radiation is also examined along the germanium bar and plotted as a function of the distance away from the junction.
