Highlights of the turbulent but terrific season which saw manager Billy Martin fired and replaced by Bob Lemon is mid-season. The Yankees fell to 14 games behind the Boston Red Sox in July, only to respond with the most memorable comeback in baseball history. They beat the Red Sox in a one-game playoff, whipped the Kansas City Royals in four games, then quickly dropped two games to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series before sweeping the next four games and capturing their second straight title. Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Bucky Dent, Graig Nettles and others led the way.
