The story of Buck Rogers, written by Phil Nolan in 1928, was the first science-fiction story done in the modern superhero space genre. Many of the "inventions" seen in this movie have actually come into existence--spaceships, ray guns (lasers), anti-gravity belts--a testament to Nolan's almost psychic farsightedness.
