Jimmy McNulty (West) is a hard-drinking, divorced screw-up of a homicide detective on the drug-infested streets of Baltimore. An unthinking remark gets him assigned to a no-hoper special task force that's investigating the drug organization run by Avon Barksdale (Harris) and second-in-command Stringer Bell (Elba). Only McNulty's doggedness rattles the higher-ups and brings unexpected consequences for task leader Lt. Daniels (Reddick) and everyone else. 13 episodes.
