Teacher Tom Crick (Irons) believes that history is a collection of stories and, when challenged by student Matthew (Hawke), he tries to interest them by relating some of his own background, growing up in the marshlands of the Fens. In flashbacks to 1974 we discover that Tom's retarded brother Dick (Morrissey) is violently jealous of the teenaged Tom and his sweetheart Mary. In the present, Mary (Cusack) is now a psychologically damaged woman who has kidnapped a baby because an abortion left her sterile. It must have made sense in Graham Swift's novel but it certainly doesn't here.
