Greengrass' intense, emotional drama covers the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Events alternate between what is happening onboard as the passengers and crew try to disarm the hijackers and what is happening at the FAA, air defense headquarters, and airport control towers as realization dawns about the scope of the disaster and what, if anything, can be done. The Boeing 757 eventually crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, with a total loss of life. Greengrass filmed in the U.K., and a number of the cast are nonprofessionals playing themselves.
