Workaholic family man Michael Newman (Sandler) has so many remotes for his electronic gadgets that he can't figure out which one does what. But a crazy salesman (Walken, who else) sells him a unique universal remote that can pause, fast-forward, and rewind his actual life. Only the gadget begins to override the choices Michael makes.
