Amusingly cutting mockery of courtroom ritual from master Lumet that's based on a true story. From 1986-88, 20 members of the New Jersey-based Lucchese crime family were prosecuted by the feds; all had attorneys except for low-level goombah Giacomo "Jackie Dee" DiNorscio (Diesel), who represented himself. Jackie wisecracks throughout the trial, garnering unexpected sympathy while causing agita in both the presiding judge (Silver) and mob boss Nick Calabrese (Rocco). Performances are excellent; note Sciorra's cameo as Jackie's bitter ex-wife.
