Soderbergh's uneven, low-budget experiment features a nonprofessional cast portraying blue-collar workers at a small Midwestern doll factory. Overweight, middle-aged Martha's (Doebereiner) life consists of caring for her sick, elderly father and fussing over young, shy co-worker Kyle (Ashley). The boring predictability of their lives is shaken by a new co-worker, outgoing single mom Rose (Wilkins), and Martha baby-sits when Rose asks Kyle out on a date. Then one of the three is murdered and there's an investigation. It's all as minimalist and banal as the lives it depicts. Besides directing, Soderbergh shot the film under the pseudonym Peter Andrews.
