Bree (Huffman) is a transsexual formerly known as Stanley on the brink of completing her male to female transformation through gender reassignment surgery. (S)he lives in Los Angeles, but just prior to her long-awaited surgery she receives a call from New York street hustler Toby (Zegers). Toby is looking for Stanley, who, as a result of a brief affair with his late mother, he believes to be his father. Because her therapist insists she must come to terms with this before her surgery, Bree heads to New York. From this point the film becomes a funny and touching road trip flick, as Bree and Toby drive back to L.A. learning about each other.
