Yes, it's primarily known as the movie that inspired a million "gay cowboy" jokes, but Lee's heartbreaking drama deserves so much better. In 1963, cowhands Ennis (Ledger) and Jack (Gyllenhaal) spend the summer watching over a herd of sheep on a Wyoming mountain range and falling deeply and inexplicably in love. Terrified to admit their feelings to the outside world, Ennis and Jack try to ignore their passions by getting married to aloof women (Williams and Hathaway) and only meeting for semi-annual fishing trips. The script blends the powerful western themes of "Lonesome Dove" with a classic tragic love tale, and Ledger's outstanding lead performance carries the picture.
