Pretty Rae Stevens (Sullavan) falls in love with Walter Saxel (Boyer) but, thanks to a misunderstanding, they part company. They meet again five years later and, although Walter is married and has children, begin an affair. Over the years, Rae is to learn that the life of a mistress is a lonely one. Based on the novel by Fannie Hurst; also filmed in 1932 and 1961.
