Seventeen year old Justin's (Pucci) underachieving, unfulfilled parents Mike (D'Onofrio) and Audrey (Swinton), saddled with their own baggage, are incapable of dealing with their son's embarrassing thumb-sucking habit. Justin's habit lands him in the office of the orthodontist/new-age guru Dr. Perry Lyman (Reeves), who uses hypnosis to break Justin's habit. But now without a coping mechanism Justin suffers from ADD. Newly armed with Ritalin and a pharmaceutically enhanced self-confidence, he becomes an arrogant, bullying monster. The beauty of this film is in the way Justin relates to the adults around him--all of whom range from eccentric to obscure and are played to perfection.
