Depicts the early years of Puerto Rican drug dealer Carlito Brigante (Hernandez), who wants to become the crime kingpin of New York's Spanish Harlem in the '70s. Carlito is drawn into an alliance with numbers runner Earl (Van Peebles) and mobster Rocco (Kelly) despite Harlem boss Hollywood Nicky (Combs) and various crooked cops. Hernandez does what he can with Pacino's shadow looming over him but this is familiar territory. Adapted from a book by Edwin Torres.
