In adapting James Toback's 1978 "Fingers," French director Audiard changed the place (from New York to Paris), the pace (more somber and less high-strung), and the names--but the heart of the story stayed the same. Here Thomas Seyr (Duris, in Harvey Keitel's "Johnny Fingers" role) does his dad's dirty collections work in crooked real estate schemes though it repulses him. But when his long-discarded dreams of becoming a concert pianist reemerge, the pull between his two lives proves more than he can bear.
