Holy Girl Movie Review 2004

Martel's second feature film, in Spanish with English subtitles, explores themes of sexual power, shame and longing through the comings and goings and chance encounters of doctors and hotel staff during an otolaryngologists (ear, nose, & throat specialists) conference. At the center is the hotel manager's teenage and very Catholic daughter who is discovering the vulnerability and power of her own sexuality. The story unfolds in a not-so-orderly fashion but patience finds an intricate and startling conclusion.
