Dark and disturbing noir has Power, in one of his best roles, as con man/carny who learns the secrets of a mentalist act and turns it into fame and fortune. When a femme fatale shrink persuades him to join a scheme to bilk the rich, it leads to a fascinating and precipitous downfall. Power fought to get the film made, and for the chance to play against his matinee idol type.
