Guess who thought it was a good idea to remake the classic 1967 Spencer Tracy/Sidney Poitier drama as a tepid comedy starring two sitcom actors? Columbia Pictures, apparently, but they're definitely in the minority. On the eve of his anniversary, successful black businessman Percy Jones (Mac) is introduced to his daughter's new boyfriend, goofy white dude Simon (Kutcher). Unnerved by the interracial relationship, Percy struggles to cope, while Simon tries his best to fit in and win Percy over. Mac works overtime to rise above the material, but the repetitive "white guy" jokes and inappropriate slapstick diminish the film's message of racial tolerance, making it come across instead as a low-rent "Meet the Parents" rip-off.
