Based on the popular children's book by Kate DiCamillo of the same name about a lonely young girl who adopts a stray dog. India Opal Buloni (played by Robb) is a lonely 10 year-old who's just moved to Florida with her preacher father (Daniels). Without friends, and missing her mother, who left her when she was three, Opal encounters a stray dog at the local grocery store. She adopts the dog as her own, naming him Winn-Dixie after the store. Slowly, the dog helps Opal ease her loneliness and she discovers some rare friendships in unusual places. While not perfect, the movie has more hits than misses and is helped along with a strong supporting cast, including Dave Matthews as a singing pet store clerk.
