Writer-director Weitz scores with this wry commentary on the effect of corporate politics on the modern family. Seasoned ad-exec Dan Foreman (Quaid) arrives at work to discover he's been demoted to make room for his new boss, 26-year-old Carter Duryea (Grace). Carter is the golden boy of the office's new corporate owners, but his work success barely masks his unfulfilling personal life. Carter finds himself drawn to family-man Dan, particularly Dan's fetching daughter Alex (Johansson), and the two men reluctantly teach each other about the vagaries of workplace ethics. Lapses into sentimentality and the end comes a bit easy, but strong performances by Quaid and Grace save the day.
