A carnal odyssey among a trio of cinephiles set against the political background of the 1968 Paris student riots. Matthew (Pitt), an impressionable American student, meets flirtatious Isabelle (Green) and her twin brother Theo (Garrel) at a protest march. He soon joins the siblings at their apartment even though he's uncomfortable at their closeness. Matthew's inhibitions dissolve as he begins a sexual relationship with Isabelle while there's increasing friction with the volatile Theo. Eventually, Matthew begins to question the insularity of the twins' privileged world. Bertolucci's a meticulous craftsman but here it's in the service of a sometimes overwrought romanticism. Screenwriter Adair adapted from his novel "The Holy Innocents." Some subtitled French.
