Negligible comedy is an exaggeration of a true story about the FBI, mobsters, and an eager beaver filmmaker. Set in 1985, undercover agent Joe Devine (Baldwin) is bent on ensnaring minor mobster Tommy Sanz (Shalhoub) who's taking bribes to keep teamsters in line on film shoots. So Joe poses as a producer and gets a script and director in one package with nebbish Steven Schats (Broderick), who doesn't know the whole thing is a hoax. The fantasy begins to take over as the production rolls along. Joan Cusack has an unbilled cameo as a movie exec. Too-crowded story collapses under the weight after a promising set-up.
