A quartet of 30-somethings discover adultery and betrayal have repercussions in this adaptation of two novellas by Andre Dubus. Best friends Jack (Ruffalo) and Hank (Krause) teach at a small college; Jack's married to Terry (Dern), Hank to Edith (Watts). Both couples have children; neither marriage is happy. Jack and Edith are in lust and enjoy woodland trysts while waiting to get caught. Serial womanizer Hank is seemingly unconcerned when he finds out but Terry is driven by fury to punish Jack by screwing Hank and then telling her husband--who doesn't react as expected. They're whiny, indecisive, self-involved, angry, weak, occasionally passionate, but not a group you'd want to spend a lot of time with (despite the capable performances from all four actors).
