City family on a weekend outing to their country home discover it occupied by squatters after an unspecified widespread disaster. Dad (Duval) tries to dispel any potential violence but is shot dead for his trouble, with the rest of the family escaping to find a suddenly very different, very dangerous outside world. They set out on a nightmarish journey across desolate and unfamiliar landscape where survival is never certain. Harsh apocalyptic vision is reminiscent of "Night of the Living Dead" and Godard's "Weekend." Austrian director Haneke is great at creating a very realistic and claustrophobic atmosphere.
