Very loose adaptation of Asimov's seminal 1950 sci-fi collection of short stories has action-hero Smith as Chicago detective Del Spooner, who's investigating the murder of robotic pioneer, Dr. Alfred Lanning (Cromwell). It's 2035, and robots are as common a household appliance as a toaster, and supposedly just as safe. But Spooner thinks those 'bots have minds (and plans) of their own and that one of them offed the good doctor. When Spooner persists in his theory that a robot committed the crime, he gets bumped from the force, which doesn't stop his investigation. The robots are creepily cool but there's no shock of the new in this crime caper.
