Hip 15-year-old Lola (Lohan)--who decides her real name, Mary, isn't cool enough--is totally bumming when her divorced mom (Headly) grows weary of Manhattan's big city lifestyle and banishes her to a quaint New Jersey suburb. To make matters worse she is snubbed by the popular set at her new high school and decides to take action, which includes vying against ultra-popular Carla (Fox) for the lead in the school play. Along the way there's ample opportunity to witness the self-absorbed, shallow, and materialistic behaviors that drown out any positive messages for the 'tweener target group. Mediocre Disney production is based on Dyan Sheldon's successful book.
