Telling his tale in five segments as the title suggests, writer-director-actor Ki-Duk departs from his typically violent fare and poignantly walks through the life of a young Buddhist monk--from his beginnings as a mischievous boy to a troubled adult running from the law and his demons--and his relationship with an older monk serving as his mentor. All scenes take place in a floating monastery (created specifically for the film) in a breathtaking Korean lake that truly reflects the drama's elegance and stark simplicity. In Korean, with English subtitles.
