Washington Heights is an upper west side Manhattan neighborhood largely populated by immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Widower Eddie Ramirez (Milian) provides for his family by running a bodega and would like his twenty-something son Carlos (Perez) to take over the business. But Carlos is a cartoonist with dreams of his own, who wants to move out of the 'hood, although his girlfriend Maggie (Navedo) is reluctant. Then Eddie is shot and Carlos is forced to mind the store, which makes the son feel even more trapped by circumstance. An effective portrayal (warts-and-all) that has something of a pat ending.
