Surrealistic fairy tale, with pretensions of examining death and the afterlife, crossed with comical Americana circa 1955. The town of Northfolk is being evacuated to make way for an incoming hydroelectric plant, as a band of strange gypsy angels search for the "unknown angel," thought to be a sick orphan boy who has been left to the town preacher. Patchwork script is a jumble of pompous spiritual pronouncements, kitschy sitcom catch-phrasery, and Lynchian confusion. At least the beautifully-filmed landscape gives you something nice to look at while wondering what the heck is going on.
