Miniseries version of the Pasternak novel focuses more on the story's romantic difficulties and slightly less on the politics of the Russian revolution. Noble doctor/poet Yury Zhivago (Matheson) marries his childhood sweetheart and cousin, Tonya (Lara), but falls madly in love with beautiful Lara (Knightley). As if this affair weren't dramatic enough, Lara is the obsession of the powerful Kormarovsky (Neill), who is determined to keep her as his possession and who is much more capable of bending with the changing political winds than the idealistic Yury. And if the ending seems different, you're right, it was changed for this re-telling.
