A less than inspired script is nonetheless brought to life by the brilliant acting of Blanchett in the title role of the real-life Irish reporter, who took on a Dublin drug lord in the 1990s. Despite threats and extreme violence, the plucky wife and mother was relentless in her pursuit of the truth. While Guerin pays for her anti-drug crusade with her life, gunned down at a red light in 1996 by a suspected drug-world henchman, pic tones down the martyr factor by presenting a well-rounded character. Hinds effectively plays a sympathetic Guerin informant who tries to warn her of her impending doom.
