Decades-spanning romance between an over-zealous doctor and a lovely do-gooder suffers from a too-earnest presentation and romantic cliches. Dashing doctor Nick (Owen) inspires American socialite Sarah (Jolie) to leave her stuffy British hubby (Roache) and really get involved in international aid relief rather than just writing a check. She follows the doc to Ethiopia and later to Cambodia and Checknya (film goes from 1984-1995), where the trouble-prone Nick has apparently been kidnapped. At least the film inspired Jolie personally since she became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and adopted her son from Cambodia.
