How is it that Michael Douglas isn't involved with this? This is just the kind of yuppie nightmare thriller for which he was the go-to guy for much of the 1980s and '90s. Quaid does an admirable job filling his shoes, however, as an NYC-based documentary filmmaker who, along with his business hotshot wife (Stone), decides to chuck the rat race of the city for a nice, quiet life in the country. Oops. They buy a big, creepy house "for a steal" and find it comes with some secrets, and a redneck caretaker (Dorff) who strangely attracts the missus, but creeps out the kids, especially daughter Kristen. Not much new is brought to the genre, but it has some truly creepy moments, and Figgis ads some much-needed subtle satire. Top-notch cast helps, as well.
