Timid Walter (Osment) is left with his eccentric uncles Hub (Duvall) and Garth (Caine) by his husband-seeking flaky mom Mae (Sedgewick). Finding no TV when he arrives, Walter becomes fascinated by the uncles' tales of an adventurous past, which are told in flashback in B-action movie style. Alternately syrupy and quirky, pic tries too much to be everything to everybody, and may not appeal to younger, jaded viewers. Their parents and grandparents, nostalgic for this kind of wholesome family entertainment, will be more receptive. Duvall and Caine make up for many of the flaws, but Osment doesn't register as strongly as hoped in his first post-child star role.
