First-rate drama takes some time to find its pace but boasts superior performances and a strong final act. Unsophisticated Army Pvt. Barry Winchell (Garity) is dragged as a joke to a gay bar in Nashville where he sees Calpernia Addams (Pace), a transgendered nightclub performer, who is taken with Barry's gentlemanly manners. They begin a tentative courtship that progresses from curiosity to love, which threatens the relationship between Barry and his unstable roommate Fisher (Hatosy), who begins spreading rumors about a gay soldier on base. The manipulative Fisher engineers a confrontation between Barry and a young Oklahoma redneck recruit that explodes into stunning violence. Based on the 1999 murder of a G.I. at a Kentucky military base.
