Highly anticipated cinematic showdown between Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees begins with the clever premise that Freddy is dying of neglect. The children of Elm Street have forgotten about him, so Freddy is ceasing to exist. Freddy gets it into his head to inject a little horror into the real world and summons Jason from whatever hell he's been languishing in and sets him loose. The only problem is that Jason is taking center stage, which displeases Freddy. Ronny Yu's frenetic direction sets a suitable pace, but after the setup, it all settles into standard "slasher film" mode until the climactic battle. Forgettable cast of victims adequately plays off of Robert Englund's scene-devouring Freddy.
